AIMS: Examine state-level data from the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS), and frontier and remote area (FAR) codes. Compare state-level data from the NSCH and YRBSS to state's FAR codes, to explore correlations between youth mental health/suicide and geographic remoteness. METHODS: State-level data from the NSCH, YRBSS and FAR codes were organized into tables. For each variable, states were ranked from 1 to 50 and assigned a numeric value. Using this numeric ranking system, Kendall's tau-b was used to examine correlations between NSCH data and FAR codes, and YRBSS data and FAR codes. RESULTS: There were no significant correlations between any FAR level and any NSCH variable. There were significant correlations between level 1 FAR areas and suicidal ideation, suicide planning, and suicide attempt. There were also significant correlations between FAR levels 2, 3, and 4 and suicidal ideation and suicide planning. CONCLUSION: Continued surveillance of youth mental health is important in building the evidence base. However, because suicidal ideation and suicide planning appear higher across all FAR levels, there is opportunity to implement sustainable approaches to prevent suicidal behaviors among youth in FAR areas.

Hearing loss (HL) is a health burden that seriously affects the quality of life of cancer patients receiving platinum-based chemotherapy, and few FDA-approved treatment specifically targets this condition. The main mechanisms that contribute to cisplatin-induced hearing loss are oxidative stress and subsequent cell death, including ferroptosis revealed by us as a new mechanism recently. In this study, we employed the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory approach as a convenient prediction method for the glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-like activity of isoselenazolones and discovered new isoselenazolones with great GPx-like activity. Notably, compound 19 exhibited significant protective effects against cisplatin-induced hair cell (HC) damage in vitro and in vivo and effectively reverses cisplatin-induced hearing loss through oral administration. Further investigations revealed that this compound effectively alleviated hair cell oxidative stress, apoptosis and ferroptosis. This research highlights the potential of GPx mimics as a therapeutic strategy against cisplatin-induced hearing loss. The application of quantum chemistry (QC) calculations in the study of GPx mimics sheds light on the development of new, innovative treatments for hearing loss.

The general synthesis of heteroleptic acyclic silylenes with a bulky carbazolyl substituent (dtbpCbz) is detailed and a series of compounds with a chalcogenide substituent of the type [(dtbpCbz)SiE16R] (E16R = OtBu, SEt, SePh, TePh) is reported. With the bulky carbazolyl substituent present, the chalcogenide moiety can be very small, as is shown by incorporating groups as small as ethyl, phenyl or tert-butyl. For the first time, the electronic properties of the silylene can be tuned along a complete series of chalcogenide substituents. The effects are clearly visible in the NMR and UV/vis spectra, and were rationalised by DFT computations. The reactivity of the heaviest chalcogenide-substituted silylenes was probed by reactions with trimethylphosphine selenide and the terphenyl azide TerN3 (Ter = 2,6-dimesitylphenyl).

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to compare impact of COVID-19 on trauma volume and characteristics on a set of trauma centers with a rural catchment area. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected different parts of the country quite differently, both in case volume and in local responses. State-wide responses have varied considerably, including variations in local mask mandates, school closures, and social distancing measures. METHODS: This was a retrospective trauma registry review of patients who were admitted to three of the tertiary care trauma centers in North and South Dakota between 2014 through 2022. RESULTS: In the analysis of 36,397 patients, we found a significant increase in trauma patient volume during the COVID-19 pandemic, with an increased percentage of patients presenting with a mechanism of injury secondary to abuse or assault. This increase in patient volume continued to rise during 2021 and 2022. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted trauma center admissions in the rural and frontier Midwest differently from more urban areas, and the importance of including a variety of settings in trauma research.

RESUMO

Historically, therapeutic clinical trials in myelofibrosis have predominantly focused on targeting patients with higher-risk disease who are at risk of increased morbidity and mortality. The endpoints have been designed to target regularly measured disease parameters that are of immediate pertinence to patient's welfare including splenic volume reduction and symptom reduction. These efforts have resulted in meaningful and measurable improvements in disease parameters in these high-risk study populations and multiple FDA approved agents. However, they have not tackled specific interventions that may be applied to patients with earlier or less advanced disease state. In this review, we summarize evidence from completed and ongoing clinical trials investigating different aspects of intervention targeted at less advanced disease and advocate for the merit of this approach.

Although the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on major metropolitan areas is broadly reported and readily available, regions with lower populations and more remote areas in the United States are understudied. The objective of this study is to determine the progression of SARS-CoV-2 sequence variants in a frontier and remote intermountain west state among university-associated communities. This study was conducted at two intermountain west universities from 2020 to 2022. Positive SARS-CoV-2 samples were confirmed by quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and variants were identified by the next-generation sequencing of viral genomes. Positive results were obtained for 5355 samples, representing a positivity rate of 3.5% overall. The median age was 22 years. Viral genomic sequence data were analyzed for 1717 samples and phylogeny was presented. Associations between viral variants, age, sex, and reported symptoms among 1522 samples indicated a significant association between age and the Delta variant (B 1.167.2), consistent with the findings for other regions. An outbreak event of AY122 was detected August-October 2021. A 2-month delay was observed with respect to the timing of the first documented viral infection within this region compared to major metropolitan regions of the US.

Deforestation is one of the most relevant transformations characterizing global environmental change in the tropics at present. There is wide consensus in pointing the context-dependent nature of tropical deforestation. In this sense, a better characterization of the phenomenon considering the social context could provide a more accurate picture of tropical deforestation. With this aim, a Q-methodology discourse analysis was conducted to characterise the different discourses that coexist in the particular region of the Paraguayan Chaco concerning the development of cattle ranching and derived deforestation. Four different discourses were identified as making sense the wide range of interests and values coexisting and clashing in the Paraguayan Chaco, namely: the Environmentalist discourse, the Business discourse, the Resigned discourse, and the Possibilist discourse. The results point that the fundamental differences between the discourses are largely explained by the different positions on three specific domains: (i) the socio-economic benefits the expansion of cattle ranching brings about; (ii) the environmental impacts the expansion of cattle ranching and the derived deforestation brings on; and, finally (iii) the degree to which an active intervention from the side of policy making to regulate the expansion of cattle ranching and to minimize possible detrimental effects is seen as necessary. The position of the different discourses in relation to these domains could help policy makers to make measures and regulations more widely accepted and followed.

Sheep milk from local breeds is important for the production of high-quality cheeses throughout the Mediterranean region, such as Manchego cheese in Spain. To maintain sustainable and efficient production, it is necessary to reach a better understanding of how the composition and hygiene of the milk affect the coagulation process, with the aim of optimizing production yield. This study implemented a stochastic production frontier function to estimate the potential production of curd and efficiency using data from the four seasons of a study of 77 Manchega sheep farms. The Cobb-Douglas production frontier model was estimated using the maximum likelihood estimation method. The results showed that the content of protein, lactose, and fat exhibited increasing returns to scale, with protein content being the most significant factor for curd production. Approximately half of the inefficiency was due to factors related to the technological properties and the hygiene of the milk. The pH, curd firmness, and concentration of lactic acid bacteria improved the efficiency of coagulation, while the concentration of spores of lactate-fermenting Clostridium spp., Pseudomonas spp., staphylococci, and catalase-negative gram-positive cocci favored the inefficiency of the coagulation process. To date, this is the first study to evaluate the effect of different factors, such as microbial groups, milk composition, and technological properties, on the efficiency of the coagulation process in dairy sheep.

BACKGROUND: Millions of people worldwide are affected by psoriasis, one of the most prevalent skin conditions. Currently, there is a lack of high-quality epidemiological reports on psoriasis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to reveal trends in psoriasis epidemiology in 1990-2019. METHODS: Using data from the GBD study 2019, we examined psoriasis epidemiology globally and across regions defined by the social-demographic index (SDI). Trends in incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates were assessed using estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC)s. Age-period-cohort analysis examined risk variations, and decomposition analysis identified factors impacting the psoriasis burden. A Bayesian Age-Period-Cohort model predicted future incidence. Frontier analysis associated psoriasis outcomes with socio-demographic development. RESULTS: In 2019, the global psoriasis burden included 4,622,594 incidence, 40,805,386 prevalence, and 3,505,736 DALY cases. Despite variations in SDI regions, the overall trend showed a decline in psoriasis rates from 1990 to 2019 (EAPC = - 0.76). The age-specific analysis indicated that the highest incidence of psoriasis was observed among individuals aged 40-64 years (global, 1,606,429). Epidemiological shifts contributed negatively to global incidence and DALYs by - 80.52% and - 103.06%, respectively. Countries like San Marino and Spain displayed the highest effective differences in the decomposition analysis. By 2030, while incidence cases per 10,000 might rise (487.36, 423.62 to 551.10), age-standardized incidence rates per 100,000 were predicted to decline (53.67, 0.00 to 259.99). CONCLUSION: This research revealed a global decline in psoriasis incidence rate from 1990 to 2019, with predictions suggesting this trend continues through 2030. Geographic disparities underscore the importance of tailored healthcare policies.

CONTEXT: A comparative study of the change in different properties of electronic and structural of the free 1H-indole-2,3-dione molecule and its complexes has been obtained. HOMA analysis was performed to investigate the effects of lithium sodium and potassium cations on the aromaticity of lithium sodium and potassium complexes of 1H-indole-2,3-dione. METHODS: Several 1H-indole-2,3-dione complexes with lithium, sodium, and potassium cations were optimized at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level. The cation and π interaction has been investigated from different aspects, including interaction energy calculations, charge transfer values, and changes in the aromaticity of the ring upon complexation. The charge transfer and natural population analysis for the complexes were performed with the natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The properties of bond critical points in complexes were studied by applying the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM). Finally, the aromaticity change of phenyl induced upon complex formation was evaluated by applying the harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA). [Li-INa]+ and [[Li-INb]+ were optimized with the wB97XD function using a version of Grimme's D2 dispersion model, and the absorption energy was compared with the calculation made with the B3LYP functional.

BACKGROUND: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is responsible for 10-20% cases of breast cancer and is resulting in rising healthcare costs. Thus, health-economic evaluations are needed to relate clinical outcomes and costs of treatment options and to provide recommendations of action from a health-economic perspective. METHODS: We investigated the cost-benefit-ratio of approved treatment options in metastatic TNBC in Germany by applying the efficiency frontier approach. These included sacituzumab-govitecan (SG), eribulin, vinorelbine, and capecitabine. Clinical benefit was measured as (i) median overall survival (mOS) and (ii) health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in terms of time to symptom worsening (TSW). To assess medical benefits, literature was systematically reviewed in PubMed for (i) and (ii), respectively. Treatment costs were calculated considering annual direct outpatient treatment costs from a statutory healthcare payer perspective. It was intended that both, (i) and (ii), yield an efficiency frontier. RESULTS: Annual direct outpatient treatment costs amounted to EUR 176,415.21 (SG), EUR 47,414.14 (eribulin), EUR 13,711.35 (vinorelbine), and EUR 3,718.84 (capecitabine). Systematic literature review of (i) and statistical analysis resulted in OS values of 14.3, 9.56, 9.44, and 7.46 months, respectively. Capecitabine, vinorelbine, and SG are part of the efficiency frontier including OS. The highest additional benefit per additional cost was determined for vinorelbine, followed by SG. Systematic review of (ii) revealed that no TSW data of TNBC patients receiving vinorelbine were available, preventing the presentation of an efficiency frontier including HRQoL. CONCLUSIONS: Vinorelbine is most cost-effective, followed by SG. Health-economic evaluations support decision-makers to assess treatment options within one indication area. In Germany, the efficiency frontier can provide decision support for the pricing of innovative interventions. Results of our analysis may thus guide reimbursement determination.

In the global wave of digitization, digital economic agglomeration, as an emerging model, profoundly impacts the economy, environment, and society. Countries worldwide are formulating strategies and policies to promote the development of digital economic agglomeration, yet they also face challenges of widening digital divide and environmental sustainability. Existing research primarily focuses on the positive effects of the digital economy, with limited assessment of the dual effects of digital economic agglomeration on sustainable development. This study utilizes panel data from 282 Chinese cities between 2011 and 2021, employing a two-tier stochastic frontier model. It reexamines the dual impacts and intrinsic mechanisms of digital economic agglomeration, attempting to capture regional and temporal variations in the dual effects to address this research gap. The study shows that: (1) The positive effect of digital economy agglomeration is much more than the negative effect, resulting in a positive net effect that shows an overall increasing trend with significant regional disparities. (2) Digital economic agglomeration has a significant negative spatial spillover effect, promoting local inclusive green growth while inhibiting inclusive green growth in neighboring cities. (3) Regarding the mediating mechanisms, industrial structure, technological innovation and resource allocation efficiency have positive indirect effects on inclusive green growth, while environmental regulation intensity has a negative indirect effect, and it has a nonlinear effect under the threshold constraint of the mediating mechanisms. This study provides policy insights for promoting inclusive green growth, emphasizing the need to consider regional differences in resource distribution, ecological environment, and social demands. It advocates for the organic integration of the digital economy across different regions, reducing polarization effects, and enhancing diffusion effects.

BACKGROUND: A shortage of healthcare providers, particularly in primary care and mental health, exists in the predominately rural state of Idaho. There are also barriers to retaining healthcare providers to work in rural and remote communities. Limited research using U.S. samples has explored factors that may affect the retention of healthcare providers in rural areas. Additionally, due to differences between communities, it is important to conduct community-level investigations to better understand how these factors may affect retention in rural areas. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore factors affecting healthcare provider retention in a rural community in Northern Idaho. METHODS: A modified version of the Nursing Community Apgar Questionnaire (NCAQ) was completed by 30 healthcare providers in a rural and frontier community in Northern Idaho to assess factors influencing healthcare provider retention. Factors were classified into classes including geographic, economic, scope of practice, medical support, and facility and community support classes. Retention factors were assessed on their perceived importance to retention as well as whether they were perceived as an advantage or challenge to retention based on Likert scales. A "Community Apgar" score was also created by combining the importance and advantage/challenge factors. RESULTS: Overall, items in the medical support group had the highest importance of any other class and included factors such as nursing workforce. Additionally, the facility and community support class, which included factors such as televideo support, was rated the highest advantage class and had the highest Apgar score, indicating it contained the factor that healthcare providers identified as the most important advantage (i.e., medical reference resources). CONCLUSION: Our study identified multiple factors that healthcare providers deemed as important advantages or disadvantages to retaining healthcare providers in rural areas. Overall, facility and community support factors were found to have the highest advantage in the retention of rural providers. Rural healthcare organizations looking to increase healthcare provider retention should target retention efforts towards these factors. Additional research should also be conducted on other rural samples across the U.S. to make comparisons of findings.

Background: Understanding the global burden of gout in the past and future can provide important references for optimizing prevention and control strategies in healthcare systems. Objectives: This study aimed to report variations in the global disease burden and risk factors of gout in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. Design: We conducted a retrospective analysis of gout based on the latest Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database. Methods: We collected data on the prevalence, incidence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of gout from 1990 to 2019. The data were then stratified by age, sex, and economic development level. Decomposition analysis, frontier analysis, and prediction models were used to analyze the changes and influencing factors influencing each indicator. Results: Globally, there were 53,871,846.4 [95% uncertainty interval (UI): 43,383,204.6-66,342,327.3] prevalent cases, 92,228,86.8 (95% UI: 7419,132.1-11,521,165) incident cases, and 1673,973.4 (95% UI: 1,068,061.1-2,393,469.2) cases of DALYs of gout in 2019, more than double those in 1990. Moreover, the pace of increase in the age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), and age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) accelerated during 1990-2019, with estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) of 0.94 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.85-1.03], 0.77 (95% CI: 0.69-0.84), and 0.93 (95% CI: 0.84-1.02), respectively, especially among men. The disease burden of gout has increased in all the other 20 GBD regions in the past 30 years, except Western Sub-Saharan Africa. The highest risk of high body mass index (BMI) and kidney dysfunction was in high-income countries such as North America and East Asia. The global prevalence rate, incidence rate, and DALYs rate of gout in 2030 will reach 599.86, 102.96 per 100,000 population, and 20.26 per 100,000 population, respectively, roughly the same as in 2019. Conclusion: With the development of society, the disease burden of gout will become increasingly severe. It is very important to study the accurate epidemiological data on gout for clinical diagnosis and treatment and health policy.

Efficiency analysis is crucial in healthcare to optimise resource allocation and enhance patient outcomes. However, the prompt adaptation of inputs can be hindered by adjustment costs, which impact Long-Run Technical Efficiency (LRTE). To bridge this gap in healthcare literature, this research employs a Bayesian Dynamic Stochastic Frontier Model to estimate parameters and explore healthcare efficiency dynamics over time. The study reveals the LRTE for New Zealand District Health Boards (DHBs) as 0.76, indicating around 32% more input utilisation due to adjustment costs. Most DHBs exhibit consistent short-run operational efficiency, with the national Short-Run Technical Efficiency (SRTE) very close to the LRTE. Among the tertiary providers, Auckland and Capital & Coast DHBs operate below the LRTE level, setting them apart from other tertiary providers. Similarly, Tairawhiti and West Coast DHBs also fall below the LRTE level, as indicated by their SRTE scores, potentially influenced by their unique healthcare settings and resource challenges. This research brings a new perspective to policy discussions by incorporating the temporal dynamics of decision-making and considering adjustment costs. It underscores the need to balance short-term and long-term technical efficiency, underlining their collective significance in fostering a sustainable and efficient healthcare system in New Zealand.

Prismanes have been attracting interest for nearly 50 years because of their geometric symmetry, highly strained structures, and unique applications due to their high carbon densities and bulky structures. Although [3]-, [4]-, and [5]-prismanes have been synthesised, [6]-prismanes and their derivatives remain elusive. Herein, fluorine chemistry, molecular mechanics, molecular orbital package, and density functional theory calculations were used to design and implement the photoisomerisation of octafluoro[2.2]paracyclophane (selected based on the good overlap of its lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals and short distance between the benzene rings) into octafluoro-[6]-prismane. Specifically, a dilute solution of the above precursor in CH3CN/H2O/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) (2:1:8, v/v/v) solution was irradiated with ultraviolet light, with the formation of the desired product confirmed through the use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The product was thermally stable in solution but not under work-up conditions, which complicated the further analysis and single-crystal preparation. The key criteria for successful photoisomerisation were the presence of fluorine substituents in the cyclophane structure and DMSO in the solvent system. A more stable derivative design requires the isolation of prismane products. The proposed fluorination-based synthetic strategy is applicable to developing novel high-strain molecules/materials with three-dimensional skeletons.

As an important class of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) of emerging concern, haloacetaldehydes (HALs) undergo degradation and transformation under environmentally relevant conditions. In this study, the stability of chlorinated and brominated HALs was investigated at different pHs and water temperatures. Results indicated that the degradation of HALs followed second-order kinetics. Surprisingly, rapid degradation of Br-HALs at elevated temperature was newly discovered in this study. At 50 °C and pH 7.5, over 90 % of TBAL degraded in 8 min, while the degradation of TCAL was ∼1 %. Moreover, increasing pH also facilitated the degradation of HALs and the alkaline degradation rate constants ( [Formula: see text] ) were found to be 7-9 orders of magnitude higher than their neutral degradation rate constants ( [Formula: see text] ). Under conditions relevant to environment and DBP measurement, HALs mainly degraded to form corresponding trihalomethanes and formate via decarburization pathway, which accounted for 70-93 % of HALs loss. The remaining 7-30 % of HAL loss was attributed to the dehalogenation pathway newly proposed in this study, successfully closing halogen balance during HAL degradation. In addition, a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model was established for HAL degradation and the degradation rate constants for three mono-HALs were predicted at different temperature. The kinetic models and reaction rate constants obtained in this study can be used for quantitative predictions of HAL concentrations in drinking water, which is beneficial for monitoring and control of these emerging DBPs. Furthermore, considering the rapid degradation of Br-HALs into corresponding products, the temperature during sample pre-treatment can have a significant impact on DBP analysis.

Introduction: Clinical trials investigating the safety and efficacy of experimental drugs and devices are the cornerstone of medicinal advancement. Enrolling sufficient participants in these trials is vital to ensure adequate statistical power and generalizability. Clinical trial participation is particularly low among certain populations, including medically underserved communities (i.e., rural areas) and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). Methods: A retrospective study design was used to understand patient outcomes and access/barriers to clinical trial participation in the rural northwest United States. A quantitatively focused retrospective chart review was conducted for adult participants enrolled in at least one clinical trial in a single northwest health system between 1999 and 2022. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed to assess trial outcomes at a significance level 0.05. Results: The retrospective chart review yielded 833 clinical trial records with 753 individual enrolled participants. The all-cause relative frequency of death at last known follow-up amongst clinical trial participants was 8.90% (n = 67). Based on logistic regression, the death was significantly associated with the participants' age at initial trial screening (ß = 0.09, p-value <0.001), those that resided in non-metro areas (ß = -0.86, p-value = 0.045), and those that lived in Northeastern Montana (ß = 1.27, p-value = 0.025). Additionally, death at last known follow-up was significantly associated with enrollment in 2021-2022 (ß = -1.52, p-value <0.001), enrolled in more than one study (ß = 0.84, p-value = 0.023), in internationally sponsored trials (ß = -2.08, p-value <0.001), in Phase I (ß = 5.34, p-value <0.001), in Phase II trials (ß = 1.37, p-value = 0.013), diabetes as a primary trial target (ß = -2.04, p-value = 0.003). Conclusion: As decentralized trial design and remote or virtual elements of traditional trials become normative, representation of rural and frontier populations is imperative to support the generalizability of trial data encouraged by the FDA.

Soil arthropod diversity contributes to a high proportion of the total biodiversity on Earth. However, most soil arthropods are still undescribed, hindering our understanding of soil functioning and global biodiversity estimations. Inventorying soil arthropods using conventional taxonomical approaches is particularly difficult and costly due to the great species richness, abundance and local-scale heterogeneity of mesofauna communities and the poor taxonomic background knowledge of most lineages. To alleviate this situation, we have designed and implemented a molecular barcoding framework adapted to soil fauna. This pipeline includes different steps, starting with a morphology-based selection of specimens which are imaged. Then, DNA is extracted non-destructively. Both images and voucher specimens are used to assign a taxonomic identification, based on morphology that is further checked for consistency with molecular information. Using this procedure, we studied 239 specimens of mites from the Canary Islands including representatives of Mesostigmata, Sarcoptiformes and Trombidiformes, of which we recovered barcode sequences for 168 specimens that were morphologically identified to 49 species, with nine specimens that could only be identified at the genus or family levels. Multiple species delimitation analyses were run to compare molecular delimitations with morphological identifications, including ASAP, mlPTP, BINs and 3% and 8% genetic distance thresholds. Additionally, a species-level search was carried out at the Biodiversity Databank of the Canary Islands (BIOTA) to evaluate the number of species in our dataset that were not previously recorded in the archipelago. In parallel, a sequence-level search of our sequences was performed against BOLD Systems. Our results reveal that multiple morphologically identified species correspond to different molecular lineages, which points to significant levels of unknown cryptic diversity within the archipelago. In addition, we evidenced that multiple species in our dataset constituted new records for the Canary Islands fauna and that the information for these lineages within online genetic repositories is very incomplete. Our study represents the first systematic effort to catalogue the soil arthropod mesofauna of the Canary Islands and establishes the basis for the Canary Islands Soil Biodiversity barcode database. This resource will constitute a step forward in the knowledge of these arthropods in a region of special interest.

Measuring technical efficiency plays a magnificent role in identifying the possible sources of productivity gain with the existing fish resources and technologies. However, there is no any efficiency study that has been conducted in the study area. Because of this gap, the causes, magnitude and possible solutions for the inefficiency of fishers have remained unknown. Thus, the paper aims to estimate the level of technical efficiency (TE) and its determinants in the fishery of Lake Tana. To address these objectives, data from 367 randomly selected fishers were collected using a multi-stage random sampling procedure. A Cobb Douglass functional form with a single-stage estimation procedure was employed to estimate the level of TE and its determinants simultaneously. The study reveals that the level of TE among sampled fishers varied from 13.5 % to 91.2 %, with a mean TE of 70.8 %. The prevailing TE level and the average yield gap of 6.46 kg per trip per fisher, substantiate the potential for improving (by 29.2 %) the current volume of fish production, with the existing fishing technologies. In addition, fishers who are situated around water hyacinth infested areas are technically less efficient (68.7 %) compared to the non-infested areas (72.9 %). The efficiency level was positively influenced by factors, such as training and marketing site. Whereas, number of non-fishing months and distance from home to the Lake were the hindering factors for the efficiency. The study confirms that no fishers in the study area are operating at their full potential and this could have a short-run implication for the substantial improvement of fish catch without additional input and technology.
